CRYPTOFACE FAQ

Where does CRYPTOFACE fall in the history of NFT's?

Check out the historical NFT timeline below:

CRYPTOFACE is a historical NFT project created on the Ethereum Blockchain on March 14th, 2017. Ahead of its time, the CryptoFace Generator Dapp gives holders the unique ability to create, design, and mint their very own CRYPTOFACE NFTs onto ETH, and into the halls of legendary PFP's. The original code has been resurrected and revived, and the project is currently minting. Read the FAQ's to learn more about how to secure a minting reservation.

The original vision of CryptoFace lies in the ability to embrace individuality, and take control of your own identity. It sought to provide tools to allow participants the chance to represent themselves however they desire, by creating their very own creative digital, on-chain identity.

On March 14th, 2017, the first seeds of smart contracts, NFT's and interactive social innovation, were planted deep into the roots of the Ethereum blockchain, where it remained buried in blocks, for over five years.

This project was known as only as "CRYPTOFACE".

After its creation, the original smart contract lay dormant, on chain, one bull cycle after the next. Until one fateful day, when Brother Ben of the lluminatiDAO received a mysterious communique from an old colleague, making him aware that an ancient, “Pre-Punks” artifact lay buried in block #3350513.

Using Etherscan, he rode the block-train back in time to 2017, to see if there was any Truth behind this mysterious tip he had received.

He was both shocked, and giddy, to discover that the legend of CRYPTOFACE was not only real, but had its own companion Dapp, with a fully functioning face generator.

He knew what he had found was truly historic: A one of a kind, PFP creation project, in all of its solidity glory, laying pristine, untouched, on the Ethereum Blockchain, with minting left to be completed.

He rushed the incredible news back to the DAO, where he left members in awe with what he had found, as he presented the proof of its existence.

After further investigation, the DAO learned that the CryptoFace Dapp and corresponding code would still ultimately allow for users to creatively design and mint their own digital avatar (PFP) onto the Ethereum blockchain.

They knew immediately that CryptoFace’s conceptual originality, and complexity, was ahead of its time. A project like this, existing in the infancy of smart contracts… would have major implications on the timeline of historical NFT's.

With a purveying sense of moral (g)obligation to the preservation of NFT history and its projects, the IlluminatiDAO voted and agreed, that they would take on the task of bringing light to this discovery, resurrect and reinforce the smart contract, and ultimately, being the minting process that failed to begin so many years ago. The rest is history, that is being written today.

Minting opportunities are slowly being released. NFT fans, technologists, collectors, investors and historians, still have the opportunity to mint one of the oldest NFT projects in history. Learn how to secure your minting reservation, today.

All CryptoFace historical mints register a hash on the original contract, which you can find here.

The CRYPTOFACE mint happens in several stages. This allows adequate time for everyone in the NFT community an opportunity to secure a minting reservation. Those who are willing to go a layer deeper, will have the opportunity to achieve their own discovery, just as GEARFACE intended.

PHASE 1 - Illuminati NFT Minting (Ends Dec 31st).

As the Illuminati DAO discovered, and revived the project, the 187 and IlluminatiNFT collections all hold a CRYPTOFACE minting reservation. There are still many pyramids left with this gold buried within. These can be purchased on the open market, right now. HOWEVER, on Dec. 31st, any unused Illuminati Mint Reservations will expire, and be re-released back into the wild, to be discovered.

Every Illuminati NFT has a CryptoFace minting reservation t waiting in the tomb of their pyramids. Many have not yet been discovered, check the CF Minting page to see if you still have a mint reservation associated with your Illuminati asset.

*Minting for IlluminatiNFT holders EXPIRES ON 12/31/2022

PHASE 2 - GOBLIN RAFFLE

There will also be a Goblin Raffle held in December. Goblins do not need to do anything to enter. 1 goblin = 1 ticket and no goblin token can win twice (but a single holder can win for as many goblins as they have).

PHASE 3 - PUBLIC MINT

The 1,000 remaining minting reservations will be donated to the NFT community through various campaigns. Please contact cryptoface2017@gmail.com for inquiries on how to get involved.

PHASE 4 - UNCLAIMED RESERVATIONS

Any unclaimed Minting Reservations will be made available to those who are willing to look a layer deeper.

As CryptoFace features an interactive Dapp for the final creation and minting of your NFT, we felt that the typical terms of "whitelist" and "allowlist", did not not add enough context to the actual process and experience of minting a CryptoFace. Thus, people who qualify, are given a "minting reservation", which reserve's their chance to interact with the Dapp, and ultimately mint the final NFT when you are ready.

1. Go to Cryptoface.me, and navigate to the MINT page.

2. Connect your wallet.

3. Click on the "Check ID" boxes for the asset you own.

4. Enter the ID of your illuminati asset, and the system will tell you if it still contains a minting reservation (CRYPTOFACE whitelist spot).

5. Select the corresponding asset in which you want to use your minting reservation.

6. Proceed to CryptoFace PFP designer, create your face, and then mint!

As the original artist/creator of a unique work, you are entitled to benefit from future sales of that token. Pursuant to the terms of your agreement with the IlluminatiNFT DAO, made at time of mint, you may be entitled to 3% of all future royalties of your token as the creator.

With our royalty contract, you will receive the ETH owed to you based on the last sale of your token after the next transfer of any CryptoFace token. For example, if CryptoFace #100 sells for 1 ETH, 0.03 ETH is sent to the royalty contract. Once another token is sold or transfered, the 0.03 ETH is then transfered to the original minter of CryptoFace #100.

It was known briefly in its own time period, but holistically, this has been a new discovery. Some crypto historians were aware of its existence, but the project was never brought into the contemporary NFT mainstream or thoroughly investigated, and thus, no one knew there was still minting left to complete.

This is likely due to the fact that the contract recorded hashes internally, and did not actively provide a way to visualize one’s avatar. Avatar attributes were encoded on-chain, but were of little use without the (now deprecated) O.G. DAPP. There is no hard-coded supply cap for the O.G. contract, limiting capitalistic R&D. These have been barriers for the resurrection of CryptoFace, until now!

There were no changes made to the original contract and code of CryptoFace, only components added to ensure it functions with the updates Ethereum has made over the past 6 years.

Keeping the original Dapp and code was incredibly important in ensuring the authenticity of the collection (and a lot of additional work went into making sure the older code base worked within today’s standards).

Additionally, the svg generator/dapp is the same one used by the original Cryptoface project and still has the same quirks, limitations and of course, incredible ability to create something unique for your PFP.

Note: Although the Cryptoface Dapp provides a multitude of creative options and tools, some holders have found other ways to modify the surface aesthetics (and actually make some pretty cool faces). Nonetheless, there is nothing that can be done to modify this, as it's a part of the original Dapp, and also poses zero threat to the underlying code.

A few minor optimizations, in the name of complete transparency:

We named the various traits and indicated resized traits as "adjusted." All colors are named using The ColorAPI to interpret the hex codes.

On the UI, We removed the ability to resize the full avatar in order to ensure the collection has some semblance of actual PFP-ready avatars.

Finally, the DAO voted to change two things. The first was to change sex/gender to show only the silhouette with Body A and Body B. The second was to remove a mustache option that symbolizes an extremely negative and painful time in the history of humankind. This posed an unneeded threat to the future viability of the project.

It was known briefly in its own time period, but holistically, this has been a new discovery. Yes, since it is an early attempt on Ethereum for PFP generation that happens to pre-date Cryptopunks. There was also stated intent for CryptoFace as a tool for identity as well as individualized, unique profile pictures. To date, the DAO has been unable to identify Larva Labs’ original intent with Punks, other than being digital collectible art.

We do not seek to diminish the amazing impact Punks has had on the space; however, the CryptoFace timing and intent grants it historical significance given the entire space has been heavily dominated by PFP projects.

Yes. We are simply helping the project complete the minting process. When using the new DAPP, the minting wallet records their hash in the original contract and also receives an ERC-721 from a new contract in the same transaction. The original minter is licensing out their hash from the O.G. contract to any subsequent owner in exchange for a 3% royalty (out of 7.5% total) whenever the ERC-721 is exchanged in the future. We also believe that creating a 10K project with such a historical connection via this novel licensing scheme is in itself, historical.

CryptoFace has never been more historically interesting and relevant, as we battle for increased decentralization, identity, freedom, and the right to our own data. We believed that anything promoting these ideals is needed, immediately. The resurrection itself also posed some serious challenges, and required us to innovate and ultimately develop an algorithm that could assist in these types of NFT recoveries. Overall, it was a win, win. We got to bring the past into the future, while coming together as a team and community to push the boundaries, executing on multiple phases of strategy and development, while learning what technical workflows are needed to resurrect an old project.

We believe this matches the original intent and era of NFT’s. Creating a finite collection on top of the historical project was the best approach to resurrecting CryptoFace. There may be future attempts to build interesting things on the original contract but they will never be part of the first collection made. Keeping it open and infinite would severely impact its significance.

Yes, there is no limit. However, this mint is seen as the first and original collection for the historic contract, as it was never originally completed, and the original contract is being used.

Yes, it can. This novel approach aloses poses potential utility for the community beyond this collection. You can find our royalty contract here.

The 2017 code included a field where the user could manually enter their private key to mint, along with a message that "You can use Metamask extension for better security." How the times have changed.

Yes. The first ethereum NFT is arguably Terra Nullius (2015). Similar to CryptoFace, the Terra Nullius contract included no transfer function.

The first ENS contract was March 10, 2017 which was four days prior to CryptoFace. A daily news Bitcointalk thread "Ethereum Project NEWS 15-03-2017" shared a blurb about the new CryptoFace project, as well as announcing an official delay of the ENS launch (per their lead dev @nicksdjohnson).

Also, in an r/Ethereum discussion on CryptoFace, the original contract developer participated in chats on using the Avatar as a means of being anon and sharing a pseudo-identity, as well as discussion of using the Avatars in social apps, and in particular, crypto (decentralized) social apps.

The origin of the CryptoFace logo is currently unknown, but it’s a classic, and we have strived to keep every single original aspect of the project that originally existed. Any new artwork, or marketing materials, has been created based off of the underlying themes, with the goal of informing and creating awareness around this historic project.

Yes, the logo, Dapp, and subsequent NFT’s are all original. Any other newer, “marketing related” art was created only to help support and share the original project in fun and creative ways.
